The project aimed to collect quantitative and qualitative data for project indicators, support Child Well-being Outcomes (CWBO) indicators, refine the Performance Measurement Framework (PMF) with baseline data, and develop monitoring tools for tracking progress. A baseline survey was conducted across 21 districts in three western provinces of Afghanistan during December 2013–January 2014 using a multi-cluster cross-sectional design. Both qualitative (46 key informant interviews and 12 focus group discussions) and quantitative (Knowledge, Practice, and Coverage [KPC] household surveys) methods were used. Facility assessments, hemoglobin tests (for anemia in women and children under five), iodization tests for cooking salt, MUAC measurements for women's nutrition status, and water quality tests for E. coli and coliform bacteria were also conducted. Findings highlighted critical issues of malnutrition and anemia, indicating a strong need for improved nutrition and health practices, particularly related to infant and young child feeding (IYCF), within the surveyed communities.
